Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the personality characteristics of inmates and the effect of mental health problems on recidivism, substance use and violence based on PAI-PS results, and to propose an intervention for social adaptation and rehabilitation after release. One-way ANOVA was conducted to identify differences between crime types. Next, binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to verify the effect of crime type on recidivism, substance use and violence. The results indicated that murderers scored higher on SOM; sex offenders scored higher on ANX, PAR, SCZ; robbers scored higher on SOM, DEP; thieves scored higher on PAR, SCZ, ANT; assailants scored higher on ANX, DEP, BOR, ALC; intellectual offenders scored higher on MAN; and negligent offenders scored higher on ALC. Additionally, mental health problems had an effect on recidivism, substance use and violence. The implications and limitations of this study are discussed.
